Posted: February 13th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Benin | Tags: | No Comments »

Mattia is back from his two months long stay in Benin and we haven’t yet met for discussing all documents he collected and produced during his stage in Cotonou and in the center for young girls ‘Claudia and Sonagon’.

While waiting to meet him, Italian newspapers published the follwing artile: Benin children

This is to remember even our ‘actions’ deal with the built environment,  we area aware of centrality of human dimension of any intervention.

BENIN #000 testo in italiano

My Name is Mattia Calore, I am an architecture student at the  Faculty of Architettura e Società of Politecnico di Milano.

Thanks to  professors Salvatore Porcaro (www.cityrom.it) and Gennaro Postiglione (www.lablog.org.uk)  and to Anna of the ONLUS “Qui le stelle” (www.quilestelle.it), I am currently in Benin, Africa, to develop a research-diploma project.

Following there is the text I wrote a few days before leaving Italy. I hope it will help to understand the whole thing.

Voices from the ghetto 0.0

My name is Matteo Perin, M.sc graduating in architecture at the Faculty of “Architettura e società” of Politecnico di Milano. This summer, thanks to the support of my tutors (Gennaro Postiglione, Salvatore Porcaro) and the help of Stefano Marras, Ph.d researcher at the Department of Sociology of “Università degli Studi di Milano”, i had the opportunity to spend two months in Nairobi, Kenya, to explore “on field” the complexity and the dynamics running in  one of the 200 informal settlements spread within the metropolitan area: Kibera, worldwide known to be the biggest slum of the Sub-Sahara African region, with a population ranging from 300.000 up to 1.000.000 people (depending on the source) packed into 2,25 sqkm, located in the south-west outskirt of the city.

Bem-vindo a Santa Marta #001

About 1.3 million people live in more than 900 “favelas” in Rio de Janeiro.

Rich neighbourhoods co-exist next to the poorest slums, with a continuous visual relation, but without a social interaction. Favelas in the middle of the formal city are the best expression of the duality that is a peculiarity of Rio: heaven and hell, luxury and poverty. Rio is an emblematic example of a city that is the representation of spacial and social segregation inside the city itself.

Many social programs are promoted by local government (as Favela-Bairro Program, or PAC Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento) to improve the integration between this informal parts and the formal city, but a lot of critics and considerations to improve the reality of favelas can be done.

#00

My name is Livia Minoja and I arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, three months ago, to make an internship about urban projects developing Rio de Janeiro’s communities. I got a scholarship – Poli-no-profit – from my school in Milan (Politecnico di Milano), where I study architecture at the Faculty of Architettura e Società, to come here. Thanks also the help of two tutors (Salvatore Porcaro > www.cityrom.it and Gennaro Postiglione > www.lablog.org.uk).

I took part to the urban design team directed by Jorge Mario Jauregui, that is involved in the projects promoted by local government (Prefeitura do Rio), in order to improve an integration between “favelas” and the rest of the city.

Finally we take off, now!

Posted: February 21st, 2009 | Author: admin | Filed under: workshops | No Comments »

Polimi-cooperation is an operative group started in January 2009 at Politecnico di Milano that wishes to put the resources of Architecture in the service of Public Interest. The challenge is to propose to architecture students experiences of sustainable partnership to design & build for collective and public use.

The group works on development issues either identifying and proposing solutions for practical problems either answering to specific requests.

The preferred working format are on-site workshops and summer schools.
